The Notre Dame Fighting Irish softball team is the state champion in Class D. Notre Dame squeezed out a 1-0 win over Deposit to claim the state title. Laurie Call singled in the only run of the game in the third inning. That run was all pitcher Carly Pike needed for the win. The state championships took place in Glens Falls and a big celebration was held here Batavia following the team’ return. The Fighting Irish girls defeated Hamilton 9-2 in the semi final earlier in the day to reach the title game, a 1-0 win over Deposit.
One person was injured in a two car crash on Route 77 early Saturday morning just after the Drake concert at Darien Lake. 22 year old Kourtney Blackmon was taken to the hospital for treatment of neck pain. She was a passenger in a car operated by 22 year old Clint Combs of Pittsford. The Combs car was rear ended by another car driven by 27 year old Joshua Mead of Buffalo. Mead was ticketed for following too closely and for DWI. The accident happened in bumper to bumper traffic just south of the village of Corfu in the Town of Darien.
It’s going to be a hot and sunny today as we close out the week-end. Highs today in Batavia are expected to reach the mid to upper 80’s. No rain is in today’s forecast. Yesterday the thermometer in Batavia reached 76 degrees for a high, the low was 60. After some showers in the morning, Saturday’s weather turned out OK. There were also a few showers in the area early this morning.
The first big concert of the season was held at Darien Lake with Drake appearing. Genesee County Sheriff’s Deputies were out in force and made 94 arrests. 7 persons were arrested with charges that resulted in being sent to jail. Another 17 were given appearance tickets or released on bail, and there were 70 arrests for underage drinking. Of the 94 arrests only one involved a Genesee County resident. 19 year old Danielle Sequerth of Hutchins Street in Batavia was arrested for Trespass after allegedly refusing to leave the concert after being told to leave several times. The winner of the coming the furthest to be arrested was from Ft. Myers Florida. Drake is a Canadian hip hop artist.
A Cuylerville man was killed in a one vehicle crash early Saturday morning on the Caledonia Road in the town of Leicester. 20 year old Bryan Holland was pronounced dead at the scene. Livingston County Sheriff’s Deputies say Holland was southbound when he lost control of his pickup truck. The truck overturned and went off the roadway into a field.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has approved the request by Financial Institutions’ Five Star Bank to buy four branches from First Niagara Financial Group.The branches, in four different counties, are in Batavia, Waterloo, Medina, and Brockport. The purchase includes $74 million in loans and $159 million in deposits. Under standard rules, the proposed acquisition cannot be completed for 15 days, so the closing is scheduled for June 22, with the conversion slated to occur over that weekend. Five Star is also buying four former HSBC Bank USA branches from First Niagara, with $20 million in loans and $217 million in deposits, but that deal is slated to close on Aug. 17. In all, Five Star is paying a price of $16 million for the eight branches. The sale follows First Niagara’s $900 million purchase of 195 HSBC branches across the state.
