In conjunction with “World No Tobacco Day” Thursday one of the biggest malls close to Genesee County went smoke free.
Starting Thursday, May 31st the Walden Galleria Mall in Erie County will be completely tobacco free outside of its stores, parking lots and anywhere else on the property.
Smoking indoors has been illegal in New York State for years, but the new rules are leaving smoking shoppers and mall employees with no place to light up.
Program Coordinator for Smoke Free Now Kevin Keenan said limiting the places for people to smoke is a positive step especially for young peoples sake.
"When your younger you think well everybody’s smoking, when everybody isn't actually smoking so if we can discourage smoking among youth we're going to less people smoking into their adulthood," said Keenan
Keenan said when smoking is out of sight its out of mind. He said smoking is the number one cause of preventable deaths.
"Smoking is associated with lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema and multiple other circulatory problems. Creating policies to protect everyone from tobaccos negative impact would be a good thing," said Keenan.
The Eastview mall which is also a large mall close to the area is also a smoke-free facility.
Smoke Free Now is sponsored by Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and funded by the State’s tobacco control program.
