It is the Memorial Day Weekend and so far the weather has been good.Today we can expect partly sunny skies with highs in the lower 80’s.There is also a 30% chance of showers and thundershowers late in the day. On Memorial Day skies will be partly sunny with 30% chance of showers in the morning and scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. It will be warm with a high around 90.
Among those schedule to march in the parade is Congresswoman Kathy Hochul. The Grand Marshall of the parade is former Assemblyman R. Stephen Hawley. His son the current Assemblyman, Steve Hawley is also schedule to march.
There will be a Memorial Day parade in Batavia starting a 10am and proceeding from EastTownPlaza to St.JosephsSchool at the corner of Main and Summit Streets.
Local law enforcement agencies are enforcing drunk driving laws this memorial day week-end. A number of sobriety check points will be set up on roadways during the holiday week-end.One of those checks was conducted Friday night in the village of LeRoy by the LeRoy Police Department, New York State Police, and the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office. 60 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. One driving while intoxicated arrest was made, that of a LeRoy woman. 8 general vehicle and traffic summons were also issued.
A Batavia man has been jailed during an incident during a football game in Austin Park yesterday. 44 year old Michael Wroten of Edward Street in Batavia was playing football when he was tackled by a 13year old youth. During the tackle a switchblade knife allegedly fell out of Wroten’s pocket. The knife opened and cut the youth who was taken to UMMC for treatment. Wroten has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree. Wroten was jailed with no bail set.
The New York State Police are mourning the loss of one of their own today. 31-year old Trooper Amanda Anna was killed when she lost control of her patrol car on route 37 in the town of Hastings, which is north of Syracuse. The accident happened around 11:30 Friday night. State Police said Anna hit a guardrail and her car became air born and flipped several times. She was taken to Upstate University Medical Center in Syracuse for a severe head injury, but passed away early Saturday morning.
Trooper Anna was a 6 year veteran of the New York State Police.
If you go through downtown Batavia this week-end you see the result of a project by the Batavia Business Improvement District, BID. Some 14 planters of flowers have been placed at strategic locations in the downtown area. About a dozen volunteers held with the placing of the planters in downtown Batavia.
