Genesee Community College is asking the County for more money. The college wants an increase of $50,000 in its annual appropriation from county taxpayers.
Wednesday night GCC presented the Legislature’s Ways and Means Committee with a $37-million budget for next year.
The budget would increase tuition for full-time students by $75 per semester and increase pay for faculty and staff by about 2.75%, which is required in their current contracts.
Legislative Chairwoman Mary Pat Hancock said they would like to do anything they can to support the college, but she isn't sure that the money will be available.
"Our funding is so very tight, we presently have mandates that are escalating in cost and we have a tax cap and we then have needs from our local services that we cannot address, because we don't have the funding," said Hancock.
GCC’s New President Dr. James Sunser said the $50,000 increase in the county's share would only represent about 5% of the county budget.
The full county legislature must sign off on the colleges 2012-13 budget.
