The Town of Batavia accepted grant money for the Agri-Business Park Today. Over 100-thousand dollars in funding was secured by the USDA’s Rural Development and Economic Business Enterprise program. The funding will be used for water infrastructure and pumping station upgrades. USDA Rural Development Deputy under Secretary Doug O'Brien says the money will create jobs.
“It is going to make it possible for, in particular, the Genesee Valley Mushroom Company, as well as other companies to locate their business and to have basic infrastructure that is needed to conduct food processing business,” said O’Brien. “It is estimated that this federal investment will create forty jobs.”
Six other areas in the State also received funds. The Grant awards from USDA totaled over 500-thousand dollars.
New York's Court of Appeals has turned down a challenge to the state's controversial redistricting plan. The Court ruled Democrats failed to show alleged "unconstitutionality" of the plan, which adds a 63rd State Senate seat. The redistricting plan that includes the new seat is seen by analysts as a victory for Senate Republicans who are holding a slim majority in the chamber and hoping to hold that majority through November. Senate Democrats believe the redistricting plan is unfair and are hoping to use other legal challenges to have it overturned.
Today of course is the fifth of May or the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo. Many people are under the impression that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated as Mexico’s Independence Day, but it in fact commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French Army in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is mostly a regional holiday that is celebrated in the Mexican state capital of Puebla and throughout Puebla, but it has little recognition in the rest of Mexico and in cities in the United States that have a high population of Mexican immigrants. Mexico’s Independence Day is actually September 16th.
