Eight people from three families safely escape flames that ripped through a multi-family home on Maple Street in Batavia.
The fire erupted at 26 Maple Street shortly after 1:30pm on Friday.
It took every available Batavia City Firefighter as-well as town of Batavia and Elba fire responders about an hour to control the blaze.
City Fire Chief Jim Maxwell said the fire started in a second floor apartment of the three-unit home.
“Everybody got out on their own. It looks like three families were displaced. One apartment with one male occupant, the other apartment a Mom and two children and the third apartment a Mom and tree children,” said Maxwell.
Maxwell said the cause of the fire seems to be accidental so far, the home is a total loss.
The woman who lives on the second floor where the blaze started was taken to UMMC to be treated for minor burns on her hands.
The Red Cross has made arrangements for both mothers and their children. The male occupant has made housing arrangements on his own.
