 Today is the tax filing deadline.  However, if you haven't yet filed, the Internal Revenue Service says "don't panic."  Filing extensions are available.  Also, the agency says those who owe money can usually qualify for a payment plan.  Meanwhile, millions of Americans are now filing electronically.  The IRS says nearly 100-million taxpayers used the agency's e-file system last year.  By the way, about 80-percent of Americans got a tax refund last year, averaging about three-thousand dollars. 


A Monroe County man was dead at the scene after a motorcycle accident in Bergen yesterday.  It happened on route 19 when the 2006 Honda Motorcycle collided with an SUV.  The dead man is identified as 26 year old Gregory Healy of Chili.  Genesee County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jerome Brewster says Healy was dead before responders arrived. Fire crews responded to the scene because the bike caught on fire. 

Record temperatures were set yesterday in both Buffalo and Rochester.  At the Monroe County Airport the mercury hit 87, breaking the old record of 85 from 2002.  At the Greater Buffalo International Airport the high temperature was 82 eclipsing the old record of 81 set I 1982.  Here in Batavia the high was 86 degrees.

It will be different today with a high of nearly 50 and a low tonight of around 30.  That has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a freeze watch for late tonight until tomorrow morning.

 A two vehicle crash at the intersection of the Indian Falls Road and Route 77 in Pembroke sent 6 persons to area hospitals, none apparently serious.  Genesee County Sheriff’s Deputies say a car driven 18 year old Jeremy Myrick of Maryvale Drive in Cheektowaga pulled in front of a suburban driven by 36 year Ocie Bennett Junior of West State Street in Albion.  The crash caused both vehicles to leave the roadway.  Myrick was issued a ticket.  There were four persons in Myrick’s car and two in the suburban.

 Work is continuing on a multi-million dollar yogurt manufacturing plant in Batavia.  Site preparation got back underway Monday in the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park following a recent protest by union leaders over hiring practices at the park.  The 206-million dollar plan is being built in part by PepsiCo.  Labor leaders have claimed subcontractors on the job are hiring out-of-state workers for the construction project.

The battle over a proposal to raise the minimum wage in New York State continues.  Senate Democrats will hold a forum on the topic Wednesday, and they've invited Republican Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos to come speak.  Skelos has said he's against a plan being pushed by Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to raise the state minimum wage to eight-dollars, 50 cents, saying it would be a "job killer.".

 A federal grand jury is close to wrapping up its review of kickback allegations against former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno.  The Republican Bruno is facing a new round of charges in the matter after a federal appeals court vacated his felony conviction last year.  Prosecutors have pledged they'll push for a new indictment of Bruno on allegations that he took kickbacks from several groups in exchange for his legislative help while he was in office.

25 year old Joshua Webster of York Road in Pavilion was arrested yesterday on charges of burglary, grand larceny, and criminal mischief.  He’s accused of a burglary last week of a business on Clinton Street Road in the Town of Bergen.  He’s in the Genesee County Jail with bail set at 10 thousand dollars cash or 15 thousand dollars bond.  Yesterday we told you of a Joshua Webster with the same age and address being arrested for leaving the scene of an accident.  That occurred on West Main Street in Batavia last week.

You are not allowed to have more than 2 cartons of untaxed cigarettes in your possession.  A 70 year old Rochester man is leaning the hard way.  Robert Polcyn (Polson) was stopped on the Byron Elba Road in Byron yesterday afternoon for failing to keep right.  During the stop 22 cartons of untaxed cigarettes were discovered by Genesee County Sheriff’s Deputies.  He as been charged with both possession of untaxed cigarettes and for failure to keep right.
