The state announced its new appliance rebate program Tuesday. $3.5 million in state funding will allow New York residents to receive a rebate after purchasing Energy Star washers and refrigerators.

Rebates will total up to $350 for refrigerators and $250 for washers.

A number of local appliance dealers are getting in on the deal. Owner of Zeches Furniture and Appliance Brandon Zeches said the Energy Star products really help people to save on their monthly energy bill.

"In washers it's a huge savings when you go to Energy Star efficient washer your talking half the water, half the energy, so you're at a 50% savings roughly there," Zeches said. "Refrigeration is not as great a savings, but it's still a savings between $10 and $20 per year."

The rebate program begins next Monday, March 19th and continue until funding runs out.
Rebates will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis for completed applications, which will be available on March 19 at www.NYSApplianceRebates.com or by calling 1-877- NY-SMART (877-697-6278.)

We've had these programs for many years in California. They are meant to get people to buy energy efficient appliances. Whenever I go to buy an appliance, I look to see what the policy is. I always buy an energy efficient one, so I can get a rebate.

The water factor is a standard that allows a comparison of the washing machine's water consumption. When it comes to that Energy Star is the best.
