A young Byron woman faces serious felony manslaughter charges in a violent, fatal accident that claimed her friend's life late last year.
Cortney Greene, 18 of Byron, is accused of Vehicular Manslaughter and Criminally Negligent Homicide in the November 26th accident on Pumpkin Hill, along Byron-Holley Road in Byron. According to Sheriff's deputies, Greene was driving a golf cart over the hill early that morning, with her friend 18-year-old Zachary Rusin riding along. Sheriff's deputies say a blood sample showed that Greene was drunk and under the influence of an unspecified drug.
As Greene drove, another vehicle crested the hill, driven by a 19-year-old girl. The operator could not react in time and rear-ended the golf cart, forcing it off the road and ejecting both Greene and Rusin.
Both were taken to the hospital. Rusin later died from serious injuries.
The other driver was not charged in the crash.
Greene is also facing a Driving While Impaired charge. She was arraigned in Byron Town Court Monday, and released under supervision of Genesee Justice.
Greene is scheduled to re-appear on March 12.
