The Genesee County Sheriff's Office says an off-duty deputy suffered a hand injury on Christmas Eve, after he was struck by a 17-year-old who had been stopped for speeding.

Austin Wester, 17 of Pratt Road in Batavia, is now jailed and charged with felony Assault, Resisting Arrest and Reckless Endangerment.

Sheriff's Chief Investigator Jerome Brewster says back on Christmas Eve, an off-duty sheriff's deputy was driving on West Main Street when he observed Wester speeding. The deputy pursued and eventually caught-up with Wester at the intersection of Route 5 and Read Road, near East Pembroke.

The deputy tried to speak to Wester about his speeding, but Wester wasn't having it. He tried to leave, and when the deputy tried to stop him – Wester allegedly injured the deputy's hand.

Wester is jailed in lieu of $30,000 bail.
