Local attorney Benjamin Bonarigo, Sr. has been appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo as the new Trustee at Genesee Community College. Bonarigo begins his seven-year term with a meeting with college president Dr. James Sunser next week.
For Bonarigo, it's a chance to serve that's come full circle over the course of nearly 40 years. Bonarigo himself attended GCC from 1975 to 1977, though he says the local community college was not his first choice for school.
"I had gone away to a four-year college, and unfortunately my father had some health problems...I was required to come home and help the family business," says Bonarigo. "But my mother insisted that I continue in college at the time, even though I thought otherwise. And I'm thankful every day that she was persistent and that GCC was there."
Bonarigo would complete a two-year degree in Applied Sciences, and went on to the University at Buffalo where he completed business and law degrees. Today, Bonarigo is a partner in a successful Batavia law practice. He also serves on several other public and private boards, including as secretary for the Genesee County Bar Association.
Bonarigo's appointment comes seven months after former Trustee Kenneth Dodd passed away.
