A bit more hope of finding a job this holiday season: the latest unemployment figures for Genesee County show a slight uptick in jobs. The State Labor Department reports a tenth-of-a-percent improvement in the jobless rate from September to October this year.
The unemployment rate in Genesee County now sits at 6.2 percent.
Similar small improvements were also reported in Orleans and Wyoming counties.
Accused Rapist Charged
An accused rapist is back on the rap sheet, charged now with Forcible Touching.
33-year-old Oscar Ramirez-Castanon of Batavia was cuffed Thursday at the Genesee County Jail. County Sheriff’s Deputies say back on November 16th, Ramirez-Castanon forcibly grabbed a woman’s breasts, and tried to kiss her, against her will.
Just a day after that alleged incident, he was arrested for felony Rape charges.
Ramirez-Castanon is jailed without bail. He’ll be in court for the Forcible touching charge on December 13th.
Small Business Saturday
Black Friday morning sales are over but a lot of folks are re-charging their batteries. The big shopping weekend continues today with Small Business Saturday.
Locally, over a hundred small business retailers and servicers will be open, offering some deals – but even more, just hoping you walk in the door.
Adam Miller Toy & Bike owner John Roche says the effect of small business on a local economy is incredible.
Roche’s shop on Center Street will be the local focus tomorrow: Congresswoman Kathy Hochul will visit and talk to shoppers about the importance of keeping your dollars local.
She’ll also visit Vintage and Vogue in LeRoy, and a few shops in Niagara and Monroe counties, too.
