"It's worse than a soap opera."
Local state lawmakers are responding today after reports that David Paterson is dropping out of the race for Governor this fall.
Paterson was apparently speaking to Democratic leaders yesterday evening and the first reports of his withdrawal surfaced this morning.
This latest development follows a rash of scandals on Paterson’s administration. Early allegations about the governor’s own infidelity were followed by the latest charge that one of his aides assaulted an ex-girlfriend, then used friends in high places to coerce her into dropping charges.
Local Assemblyman Steve Hawley says Paterson really didn’t have a choice; State Senator Mike Ranzenhofer, whose district includes Genesee County, says he doesn’t think anyone should be surprised.
The governor reportedly will serve out the rest of his current term as the replacement for resigned former governor Eliot Spitzer.
