Tens of thousands of Verizon workers will return to work Tuesday after a strike that
lasted about two weeks. The Communication Workers of America and the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers have issued a statement saying they have agreed to come
back to work while they continue to negotiate with Verizon Communications Inc. James
Wagner, the president of CWA Local 1122, which represents more than 500 workers in the
Buffalo area, said the two sides are still far apart when it comes to things benefits, job
security, and work flexibility.
About 45,000 Verizon landline workers from Massachusetts to Virginia went on strike on
Aug. 7, fighting management demands for contract givebacks. At issue is the company's
declining landline business in an age of mobile phones.
The weather was perfect yesterday for the major downtown event of the summer, “Summer in
the City”. Thousands of area residents turned out to see the classic cars, the main stage
entertainment and the food and non-profit vendors. Summer in the city is put together by
the Business Improvement District.
A confrontation last evening led to the arrest of 55 year old Gary Murray of the Gorton
Road in Basom. He has been charged with criminal mischief after he allegedly damaged the
property of another person after a vehicle was damaged during the confrontation with
another person. The incident occurred on the Lewiston Road in the Town of Alabama.
Murray will be arraigned in Alabama town court in September.
In Wyoming County, 28 year old Branden Hare of Silver Springs has been charged with
Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Menacing, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, and
Reckless Endangerment. Hare reportedly punched out a car window while the victim and two
children were sitting inside the car. The incident happened on the School Road in the
Town of Gainesville. Hare has been jailed in lieu of 10 thousand dollars bail.
Bail has been set at 15 thousand dollars for 54 year old Anthony Nicosia of the Albion
Road in Oakfield. Nicosia was arrested Friday after an investigation revealed that he
allegedly abused a child at his residence back in June. He’s been charged with Criminal
Sex Act, Forcible Touching and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
