A young registered Batavia sex offender has a deadline to decide whether to take up to 5 years in prison, or risk 21 years.

18-year-old Ronald Smith appeared in County Court this morning. Smith is set to be sentenced on August 8th for failing to register his address with law enforcement. He could receive up to 3 ½ years in prison for that crime.

August 8th is also his deadline to make a decision the plea deal offered to him, which reduces his three charges of felony sexual abuse to just one. Under the deal, he’d serve 5 years prison time. If he goes to trial and is convicted, his sentence could be much longer.

The trial would be held in October.

How can a teenager think about committing a sex offense? What is wrong with these kids? Don't they listen to what teachers in school would tell them?
