A 42-year-old Covington man is behind bars today in a bizarre and rather disgusting case of smuggling drugs into jail.
According to Local Drug Task Force officers, Nikko C. Gambino had apparently been smuggling illegal drugs into the Genesee County jail recently, as he arrived to serve weekend sentences for an earlier crime. Gambino was allegedly distributing those drugs to fellow inmates. Reportedly, some corrections officers first discovered this activity and reported it to the Task Force.
When Gambino came in to serve his latest term, Task Force members were waiting for him. They frisked him at the jail, but found nothing.
Suspecting something 'deeper,' the Task Force took Gambino to UMMC to have him checked out. That's when they allegedly discovered the illegal drugs Alprazolam and Suboxone in his digestive tract. Then it was a waiting game until Gambino...'passed' the drugs.
That's where it got interesting. Upon his expelling the substances, Task Force officers were prepared to confiscate them as evidence. But Gambino allegedly grabbed the drugs, and put them in his mouth, in a vain attempt to destroy the evidence.
Gambino has been jailed without bail. He is charged with 2 counts of felony Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, one count of felony Promoting Prison Contraband, and one count of felony Tampering with Physical Evidence.
