Eric C. Wall, a student at Byron-Bergen High School, died Friday afternnon when struck by a train near Route 19 in the Village of Bergen.
The accident remained under investigation by the Genesee County Sheriff's Office on Friday night.
From eyewitness accounts and preliminary police information it was leared that Eric attempted to cross the tracks as a CXS freight train was eastbound approaching the crossing. At the same time, a westbound Amtrak train was making it's way through the crossing.
Witnesses, some of whom were Eric's classmates, theorized that`Eric may have been trying to beat the freight train through the crossing and never `saw the Amtrak passenger train until it was too late.
The conductor on one of the trains reported the accident, which was witnessed by several students who had just been released from school.The tracks are located on Route 19 between Hunter and Rochester`Streets in the village.
Byron-Bergen School officials had grief counselors available to students on Friday night.
