An impromptu rally in downtown Batavia this afternoon drew a couple dozen flag waving, self-described patriots praising the US military’s take down of Osama Bin Laden.
Victor Thomas, 27, of Batavia made the sign left at the Upton Monument this morning. The red, while and blue painted sign read simply, "Osama got Obama’d."
Genesee County Manager Jay Gsell ordered the sign removed, saying it was "inappropriate" for a veterans monument.
Thomas then quickly organized the rally in front of the post office.

"We were just trying to be patriotic," Thomas said, "we just wanted something for the people of Batavia to drive by and blow their horns, show their appreciation and say, 'yeah, we got 'em'"

Thomas said he and his friends got the idea for a sign watching television coverage of the rally at the White House late last night. He said when they went outside there were no noticiable signs in Batavia of any celebration or recognition of the military's operation that led to Bin Laden's death.

"The only thing we thought to do was head to Walmart and get some material to make a sign,"
Thomas said. He denied there was any hidden political message or any disrespect to veterans for placing the sign at the monument.
