U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer made a stop in Batavia today.

The Senator appeared at the American Legion Hall, urging national Veterans’ Secretary Eric Shinseki to set a prompt deadline for the start of construction on a veterans’ cemetery in Genesee County.

Schumer cited the county’s central location in Western New York as the main benefit. He says local families not have to drive to the next closest cemetery in Bath, NY, to honor loved ones.

The Veterans Administration, which has a hospital here in Batavia, announced earlier this year that they are searching about 200 acres in the Batavia area to build a veterans’ cemetery.
