If Batavia property owners and water users had anything to say for or against an increase in property taxes or water rates, they kept those comments to themselves.
Public hearings were held earlier tonight into both issues. No one spoke on the property tax increase and only one person had anything to say about the $10 a year average increase in water rates.
The property tax increase of 1.5-percent is part of the 2010-2011 City Budget. The water rate increase is contained in separate legislation. The bill calls for a water rate increase of 2.5 percent plus a $1 per quarter "capital improvement fee."
Council President Mary Ann Clattenburg says the fact no one appeared at the public hearing on the budget and reulting tax increase does not mean people have no opinion:
Council will take a vote on both the budget and water rate increase at their next business meeting on Feb. 22.
