Firefighters soliciting funds at intersections has become a common occurence. No one questions the worthiness of the various causes they solicit for. However I think it is time for people to question whether or not it is demeaning for firefighters to solicit in this manner. If panhandlers or homeless people were to solicit in this manner, they would likely be arrested as Sec. 1157 of the NYS Vehicle&Traffic Law prohibits this type of activity. No police agency has the will to enforce this law against firefighters, but perhaps the time has come to do so.
